Joshua Morrison – Kill Devil Hills

Low-key folk is nothing particularly new or uncommon in today’s music scene. I’ll admit that I’m kind of a sucker for it, though. Joshua Morrison’s “Kill Devil Hills” fits into this category (as well as the all-too ubiquitous ‘singer-songwriter’ genre) and were you to listen to just the first minute, you might throw it away as one of many. Of course, if you like that first minute, with Morrison’s airy voice holding everything together, you’ll find the song only goes up.  I’m not sure who produced “Kill Devil Hills,” but they knew what they were doing. Full of stirring strings and perfectly placed touches of drums and electronic guitars that enhance Morrison’s sound without overtaking it.

Unfortunately, the track is a bit low quality because I got it directly from KEXP’s Song of the Day podcast. So sorry for that, but the song’s definitely worth hearing in whatever form you can get.
