R&B has become a lost art in music. It has became an overlooked genre in music. With people like Drake, Kid Cudi, and B.o.B rapping and singing, hip-hop has successfully annexed rhythm and blues. In my mind this is terrible, I mean even Usher himself released a majority hip-hop album, Raymond vs. Raymond. I am a big fan a rhythm and blues, it is a staple for the music we listen to today and it puts out such a mix of emotions. One album could contain love, hatred, joy, pain, rage, and passion like no other genre can. As Usher and R. Kelly move out of music, a new age of R&B singers are making a name for themselves.
Miguel Jontel, who goes by the mononym Miguel, a singer/songwriter out of San Pedro, CA, has been gaining respect as a singer. He has already collaborated with the likes of Usher, Asher Roth, and Musiq Soulchild, writing songs on some of their albums and has stepped on some of Blu’s tracks. He has an old school feel to him, a calm, laid-back way of singing that allows you to truly enjoy his voice and lyrics while being able to be edgy and electric at the same time. While he was a kid he listened to a mix of classic rock, hip-hop, funk, and R&B. It has set him up to be able to cross lines and genres. He describes his on style in an interview, “fly, funkadelic, intergalactic-hip-hop-meets-sexy-orgasmic crazy, dope shit.” If you want to hear him, he has a mixtape called Mischief: The Mixtape and a new single named “All I Need Is You” (feat. J. Cole.)
All I Need Is You
Most people would not consider Bruno Mars an R&B artist. His most-heard songs are “Billionaire” with Travie McCoy and “Nothin’ On You” with B.o.B which are both extremely poppy songs. He does have soul though and no one can doubt that. After all Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds was a rhythm and blues album even though N’Sync was the epitome of pop music. Bruno can flat out sing and that is the end of it and he does blend pop and R&B well. In July he released a single off his new album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans which will be released Oct. 5th on Elektra Records, titled “Just The Way You Are.” If you can’t wait for that he has a 4 song EP named It’s Better If You Don’t Understand.

Whenever Joell Ortiz needs someone to sing a hook or chorus on a track, he goes to Novel. Novel is a musical hybrid. He is truly a singer that can rap, unlike Drake, Cudi, B.o.B, and so many other artists. He has collabs with some of the biggest names in the game, Lauyrn Hill, Talib Kweli, and India Arie. When he sings on his own tracks they are usually addressing the issue of love, either heartbreak or happiness. Personally I am a big love song fan and that’s why I am drawn to him as an artist. He has 4 or 5 mixtapes with a new one on the way, Legato Blues Summer. He is currently working on his debut album Calligraphy, which does not have a release date yet.
