There aren’t many bands from the ’80’s that I like, as a whole it’s an era of music I generally tend to avoid. That isn’t to say that it’s all bad music, but it always seemed like there’s a lot more schlock to root through to find the good stuff.
But Tears for Fears is one of those bands that immediately sticks out of the decade. While their music had those cheesy ’80s synths and drums, it was never to the ultimate impairment of the song. In fact, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” uses that sound to make one of my absolute favorite intros, which then goes into a great pair of opening lines:
Welcome to your life
There’s no turning back.
While the song isn’t conceptually very deep (hint: see title), Tears for Fears make it effective by wrapping it in a unique little pop song.
